From the first November brine truck to the last April thaw, Michigan runs a five-month assault on vehicle paint. It is the season that makes the strongest case for paint protection film, and also the season people ask us the most questions about it. Here is what is actually happening to your paint from Thanksgiving to tax day.

The winter damage chain

  • Salt and brine spray coats the lower half of the vehicle after every drive, and sits there working on any spot where paint is compromised.
  • Plow gravel and sand turns every highway into a blast cabinet. The car ahead of you is throwing stones at your hood and bumper all winter.
  • Chips become rust. This is the Michigan-specific part. A chip that stays cosmetic in Arizona exposes bare metal to salt here. Rust does not wait for spring.
  • Freeze-thaw scrubbing. Ice forms in and around damaged paint edges and pries them wider, then the wash you run to get the salt off drags grit across the finish.

What PPF changes

Paint protection film is a thick, clear urethane barrier over the paint. In winter terms: the stone the plow truck kicked up hits film, not clear coat. The salt sits on film, not on an open chip. The leading edges that normally look sandblasted by March are still paint underneath.

Film does not make a vehicle invincible, and any shop that says otherwise is selling. What it does is take the hits that would have been permanent paint damage and turn them into nothing.

Caring for PPF through a Michigan winter

  • Keep washing through winter. The point is to get salt off the vehicle; film does not change that.
  • Touchless or hand washing is kinder to every surface, filmed or not.
  • Let the shop that installed your film walk you through care the day you pick the vehicle up. We do that with every install.
