The Michigan rule

  • Front door windows and windshield: you can legally tint the top 4 inches, as dark as you like.
  • Everything behind the front doors: any window behind the driver and front passenger doors can be as dark as you want. Rear doors, quarter glass, back window: your call.

That is the whole shape of it. Michigan does not set a percentage limit for the glass behind your front doors, so limo-dark rear glass on a truck, SUV, or sedan is legal here.

Medical exemptions

Michigan does allow medical exemptions for darker tint than the standard rule permits. If you are light sensitive or photosensitive, the path looks like this: get the exemption from your physician or optometrist, then take a copy of your medical exemption to the Secretary of State and have it noted on your actual driver's license to properly comply. Keep your documentation with the vehicle.
